Fontbonne University was originally founded in 1923 as a women's only college, and later became co-ed in the 1970s. Fontbonne is a private, Roman-Catholic institution that was previously known as St. Joseph's Academy and Fontbonne College.

Mentor Profile

Ben Mizera enters his fourth year as the Director of Athletic Communications at Fontbonne University.

Prior to joining Fontbonne, Mizera was the Sports Information Director at Lindenwood University-Belleville since January 2016.

 

He oversaw 34 sports, led the redesign of lindenwoodlynx.com, was the main statistician for multiple sports, created/updated/released press releases, program inserts, game notes, season previews and feature stories.

​

He also created the programs first Instagram profile, posted over 400 graphics to the site and held multiple coaches shows throughout the year as well.

​

Before heading to LU-Bellleville, Mizera was the SID / Champion of Character Coordinator at William Woods University for three years. He oversaw the Owls 16 sports and handled stats for multiple sports.

​

Mizera got his Master’s of Science Degree in 2012 from Missouri Baptist in Sports Management. He got his Bachelor of Science Degree in 2010 from Quincy University in Sports Management.  

​

Mizera is a current member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Mentorship Details

General Hours:

The hours will vary. I will need to be able to cover all softball games. Recaps and social media posts should always be posted the same day.

​

Main Duties:

1. Maintain the Fontbonne Softball webpage including roster and headshots

2. Create social media posts for special news, game day posts, and game day recaps

3. Attend home games and keep the score on PrestoSports and the scoreboard

4. Create game day recap stories after every softball game

​

Compensation:

Unpaid, volunteer

​

Specific Goals:

1. To become familiar with athletic department software like Presto Sports

2. To assist the AAD of Athletic Communication in the coverage of softball

3. To learn how to create sports information stories that is engaging and gives the reader a good summary of the game

4. To learn how athletic departments are ran at the NCAA Division III level

​

Expected Learning Outcomes:

1. Develop interpersonal communication skills within an athletic department

2. Build a record of relatable work experience in a college athletic department

3. Acquire employment contacts within an athletic department

4. Become familiar with scorekeeping and website software that athletic departments use
